First of all, we'll take the opportunity to discover the Roman monuments listed as World Heritage Sites by Unesco: the amphitheatre and its 25,000 seats, famous today for its gladiatorial and bullfighting games. We then continue on to the ancient Roman theatre and Constantine's baths. We will then discover religious monuments such as the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral of St Trôphime, the starting point of the pilgrim's route to Santiago de Compostela. Finally, we'll visit the famous garden of the former hospital and night café, painted by the Dutch expressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh. Discover the Camargue and its special animals: pink flamingos, bulls and horses. Ponds mingle with the land or the other way round, where people grow rice, salt and vines. A seaside town symbolises this region: Les Saintes Maries de la mer and its fortified Romanesque church, a Christian pilgrimage site on the Way of St James. Pilgrims come here to venerate the relics of the St Maries (Marie Jacobée: aunt of Jesus and Marie Salomé: mother of the apostles James and John). The gypsy community gathers here every year to celebrate the relics of their patron saint, Saint Sara. This village is considered to be one of the oldest Christian cults in the West.
