The levels are defined in relation to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - (CEFR) is a document published by the Council of Europe in 2001, which defines levels of proficiency in a foreign language according to know-how in different areas of competence. These 6 levels are now the reference in the field of language learning and teaching in European countries and particularly for learning French in France.
