Training French teachers in Montpellier: interview with a scholarship holder from the French Institute in Serbia at Accent Français

Every year, Accent Français welcomes French teachers from all over the world as part of its specialised teacher training programmes. Among them, Katarina, a French teacher from Serbia, came to Montpellier as an outstanding grant recipient from the French Institute of Serbia, a long-standing institutional partner that has trusted Accent Français for several years in the continuing education of French teachers.

In this interview, she shares her immersive experience combining French language courses, innovative teaching practices and the discovery of Montpellier.

Why did you choose Accent Français for your language training?

Katarina :
“The choice of the school was excellent. It was the first time I had taken language courses as a teacher myself, which is essential during training programmes. The programme was very well designed and everything was prepared in advance. I was warmly welcomed and introduced to the other learners from the very first day.”

What impressed you the most about the French classes?

Katarina :
“I really enjoyed working with Saadia, the FLE teacher. What I particularly appreciated is that the school doesn’t follow a single fixed method: each week is built around a theme, with appropriate teaching materials. We worked on topics such as gender inequalities and sexual harassment, which helped me enrich my vocabulary and further develop my language skills.”

“At the end of my training, we even had an assessment in the form of a formal argumentative letter, and I received a score of 9.5 out of 10 — a result I was very proud of.”

How did you experience the teacher training programme?

Katarina :
“It was excellent. I had the pleasure of working with Claire, Juliette and Olivier, who shared many teaching resources suitable for learners of all levels.”

“With Claire, I learned how to use advertisements, short films and interactive online activities in class. With Juliette, we worked with theatre techniques to improve intonation, rhythm and emotional expression. As for Olivier, he introduced me to different ways of using artificial intelligence in FLE classes — creating characters from descriptions, organising city treasure hunts, or even making historical figures ‘speak’ like Albert Einstein. It was truly unforgettable.”

Did you have time to discover Montpellier during your stay?

Katarina :
“Yes, absolutely! I loved the city centre, Place de la Comédie, Rue de la Loge and the Saint-Roch district. Even though the weather wasn’t always ideal for excursions in the region, I had plenty of time to explore the city in depth.”

And what about your host family experience?

Katarina :
“It was the highlight of my stay. My host mother, Lydia, is a retired French teacher, so we spoke a lot together. We spent our evenings sharing meals from the south of France, listening to the radio and talking for hours. From the very first day, I realised it was exactly what I needed: being fully immersed in the French language.”

🌍 An Experience That Reflects Our Commitment to International Teacher Training
