Fête de la musique in France June 21

French Traditions : The Festival of Music

The "fête de la musique" festival is a French tradition since 1982, date of creation of this festival which honors the music under all its forms. On the initiative of the Minister of Culture at the time, Mr. Jack Lang, the idea came when he realized that 5 million French people (1 in 2 young people) played music but that no event celebrated this art.

It is thus on June 21, 1982, between 8:30 pm and 9 pm, that the first music festival was born !

Why the 21th of June ?

Because this day is also the day of the summer solstice (change to daylight saving time): to enjoy the night even more to dance and sing.
Make music, celebrate music" is the slogan in 1983. For this occasion, professionals and amateurs of music are invited to play in the street in all the cities of France. Take your favorite instrument and go join the musicians of your street to put the atmosphere !

Today, the French are attached to this free festival which gathers around music. In Europe since 1985 and later in the whole world, we celebrate this event and it is now in more than 130 countries and more than 340 cities in the world that the music festival resounds.
